PDT is a highly effective way of treating mild to severe sun damage, pigmentation, acne, rosacea, open pores or general skin ageing. Most people are suitable for the treatment with a few exceptions. The treatment can be used on any part of the body, including the face, neck, décolletage, hands, arms and legs. PDT is a simple treatment with minimal discomfort, side-effects, downtime and excellent cosmetic outcomes.
The treatment itself involves application of a photo sensitizing, non-toxic chemical to the skin, allowing an incubation period (generally a few hours), and then applying a light source for 30 minutes. The chemical is only absorbed by the abnormal or damaged skin cells and the treatment is focused only on these areas, leaving the normal skin cells unaffected.
After the treatment, absolute sun avoidance is needed for 2 days. Treated skin is red and can flake, crust or peel. Healing takes 5-10 days, depending on the severity of sun damage present. With complete healing, healthy, smooth and clearer skin is revealed.
Winter is definitely the best time of year to have PDT, as it is much easier to cover up and avoid the sun. If you are interested in PDT to improve the health and quality of your skin, please contact Shine to make a medical appointment to assess suitability.
