The term platelet-rich plasma is used to describe blood plasma with a high concentration of platelets. Platelets contain growth factors that stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin. When platelet-rich plasma is injected into the skin, there is an improvement in skin quality and texture. PRP works on all three layers of the skin-the epidermal, dermal and subdermal layers, producing a plumper, softer and smoother skin. Areas that are typically treated include the delicate skin around the eyes, the neck, the décolletage and the backs of hands. These areas are often very difficult to treat with other non-surgical methods.
The image below demonstrates before and after PRP treatments.
The treatment is excellent for improving the overall texture of the face and is perfect to follow other skin treatments that stimulate collagen production, for example after the Elos Sublative RF resurfacing procedure that we perform here at Shine. Regen PRP has also been used to treat thinning of the head hair and also to treat saggy abdominal skin following a pregnancy.
During a typical treatment session, blood is taken and then separated in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area and then the platelet-rich plasma is injected into this area using a very fine needle. Patients should expect to have some swelling, minor bruising and redness after the treatment and this can take 24-48 hours to settle. We recommend an initial course of three treatments performed 6-8 weeks apart. Every treatment will result in stimulation of collagen and an improvement in skin texture that will continue for several months after the last treatment. Generally a single follow up treatment every 6-12 months will help to maintain results.
Regen PRP treatments rely only on your own growth factors to rejuvenate your skin. There are no foreign substances injected so there is no risk of allergy and is a very safe treatment.
