What is PRP
PRP therapy is a process used quite extensively in various areas of medicine and surgery to stimulate the healing process. Platelets contain many different growth factors. The result of this treatment is an increase in collagen and elastin in the injected tissue. In the case of a scalp treatment, injecting PRP will cause weak hair follicles to become healthier and larger, resulting in thicker hair.
What is Involved in a PRP Procedure
Blood is collected in a manner similar to taking a blood test. This is then spun down in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The platelet rich plasma can be separated from the platelet poor plasma and then injected into the scalp. There is very little discomfort with this process as a strong topical anaesthetic is applied initially for 30 minutes. I also use very fine needles described as “invisible needles”. I recommend an initial course of 4 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart and then a top up treatment after 6-12 months.
What Can I Expect from a PRP Scalp Treatment
New hair growth can be seen as early as two months after the first treatment but is best seen after 5-8 months. Unfortunately, not everyone will see significant results. We are seeing visible improvements in about 50% of cases. The best time to consider treatment is when the hair is starting to thin. If there is complete hair loss, this is not the best treatment option.
Who Can Have PRP Therapy to the Scalp
This is a very safe treatment with very few possible side effects. However, it is not suitable for everyone. There are a few conditions and situations where a good response cannot be expected. It is essential to have a consultation prior to the treatment to see if you could expect a good response.
