Long-lasting hair removal without the hassle

Having unsightly or unwanted hair on any part of your body can be a problem. For some the amount of hair increases with age because of changes in our hormone levels. For others it is a genetic condition that interferes with their enjoyment of life. Whatever your reasons for wanting to remove or reduce the amount of hair you have now, Shine Clinic can help with our IPL hair removal treatment by Elos.

The Elos technology that is employed here at our clinic uses combined radio frequency and IPL energy to target and remove hair follicles within the skin. This ensures a total reduction of the unwanted hair and a long lasting end result. Elos technology combines the best of both energies for a hair reduction treatment that both minimises pain as well as maximising safety.

Who can have this treatment?

Permanent hair reduction using IPL and RF by Elos is very safe and effective. It works best with darker hair on lighter skin. People with red or blond hair are not good candidates for this treatment. People with dark skin types or who have had recent colour from sun exposure are at risk of increased pigment in the treated area and should not be treated. There is a small number of prescription medications that increase sensitivity to the sun. If you are taking such a medication, the treatment cannot be performed at that time.

What should I expect during treatment?

The Elos IPL hair removal technology is quite gentle and requires little in the way of preparation. The patented Elos machine combines both IPL and radiofrequency technologies to quickly and safely remove hair in any area. Treatments can include hair removal from face, underarms, the bikini line and legs.

A consultation and skin patch test are always required before a first treatment with IPL and RF hair removal. This is to ensure the treatment is appropriate and there are no contraindications. We ask you to shave the hair prior to your appointment. It is important not to wax for 6 weeks prior to your treatment as this removes the hair from the follicle and it is the hair that is being targeted in the treatment. Therefore, if the hair is not there, the treatment will not be effective. For sensitive areas, occasionally a local anaesthetic can be applied to small areas only. A gel is applied to the skin prior to our technician passing the hand piece over the area where hair is to be removed. The sensation is compared to that of a rubber band being flicked against the skin. The skin may feel a little hot and be pink in areas. This is normal. There is no downtime for this treatment.

Whether you are using IPL or laser hair removal, only the hair in the growing phase will be treated. If the hair follicle is in a resting phase, with no hair present, there is no effect with treatment. This is why all forms of permanent hair reduction require a number of sessions. The actual number and the time between sessions will vary depending on skin colour and the site being treated. Generally 4–6 treatments are required 4–8 weeks apart for best results.

Are there side effects or risks involved?

Permanent hair reduction using the Elos IPL and RF system is very safe with minimal side effects. This is the case only when appropriate patients are selected. It is not indicated for dark or tanned skin or for people taking photo-sensitising medications. Minor temporary heat and redness can occur after a treatment.

Complementary Treatments

Many prefer to use hair removal on the face in conjunction with treatments for skin tightening or skin rejuvenation to improve the appearance generally.
