We tend to take special care of our face, but as we age our skin changes, losing its elasticity as well as much of its moisture. The thick layer of matrix proteins that gave our skin its healthy glow are no longer as plentiful and the organisation of our skin structure begins to weaken. In addition, our bodies begin to have a tendency to redistribute fat, not always where we would like it to be.
As a result your face and hands may become somewhat thin in appearance while hips and bellies often take on a more rounded look. These hollowed areas can also leave us with sagging skin as the once plump cheeks and temples no longer support the skin around them. While there are many skin rejuvenation treatments that can help bring back a youthful surface, dermal fillers work below the surface to round out and replenish the areas in our face that may have begun to lose volume.
How do dermal fillers work?
So what exactly do we mean when we say we will be using dermal fillers? You are probably most aware of this technique because it was first used in breast augmentation. While the areas being filled are different, the principles are the same. Generally a filler is used to draw water to the target area which in turn will help the skin soften and bulk up the layers below the skin. This helps the area to smooth out and look fuller.
Here at our Brisbane clinic we use an injectable dermal filler gel. This gel is made from a naturally occurring sugar called hyaluronic acid. The gel is injected below or within the dermal level where it can literally fill in an area such as a shallow wrinkle or a hollow caused by the loss of collagen and water under the skin. We use them at a fine strength for those fine lines such as the ones above the lip that many call ‘smoker’s lines’ or for tear troughs.
We use gel strengths with greater lifting capacity are when we use them to plump up cheeks that have begun to look a bit hollow or give new life to sagging skin. This is why it is so important to have someone who knows and understands all the fine details of how dermal fillers and volumizers work. Each objective needs its own solution. The objective, when treating these effects of ageing, is to restore the natural and soft curves that are the hallmark of youth.
While many areas will benefit from the use of dermal fillers, the following areas are the most common ones we have treated here at Shine Clinic:
- Cheeks – We restore lost volume and bring back that youthful curve. Plumping cheeks can also help to lift sagging skin in the lower face.
- Temporal Hollows – Those hollow areas at the temples can age us before our time. By filling those hollows, we can also lift the eyebrows and create a rounder more youthful shape to the face.
- Jawlines – When treated early, jawlines that tend towards heaviness can be lifted with fillers.
- Nasolabial lines – We can fill those deep grooves that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth, especially impactful when done in conjunction with cheek filling.
- Lips – Lips that have become thin can be plumped and lose that dry thin look.
- Chin augmentation – Redefines the line of your chin.
- Nose reshaping – Dermal fillers can be used to fill in minor dips or correct symmetry.
- Back of hands – Hands often become thin with age. See our treatment page on hands for more information on how dermal fillers can add volume to hands.
While it is natural to see the loss of those youthful curves in our face, it doesn’t mean we have to accept them. The face that looks back at you in the mirror can look and feel more like the one you know is inside you by taking advantage of the dermal filler treatments we offer at Shine Clinic in Brisbane. Who can have this treatment?
Like many treatments of this type, anyone who is pregnant, thinks they may be pregnant or is still breast feeding a child should not use dermal fillers. While it is generally agreed that an allergic reaction to this type of treatment is rare, if you are someone who frequently has allergic reactions you might want to have an allergy test first. In addition, anyone who has found they have a susceptibility to bad scarring may not be a good candidate for this type of treatment.
Anyone who has an active infection, who has herpes simplex with an active cold sore or is on any kind of immune suppressing medication should avoid dermal fillers. Care should be used as well in the presence of an active autoimmune disease.
What should I expect during treatment?
Probably the most important part of your treatment is the initial consultation and assessment with Dr Kathy Gallagher. This is time to discuss any concerns you may have and to talk about achievable results. Various options will be discussed along with benefits and potential side effects.
Treatments using dermal fillers at Shine Clinic take about 30 minutes for each session. The skill and experience of the cosmetic doctor performing your treatment, along with the quality of the product used, will have a lot to do with the result you achieve. You should see improvements immediately and then continue to see additional improvements over the next 2-3 weeks as water is drawn to this area. The technique of injection will vary from case to case. We are constantly reviewing and refining techniques to give the best possible outcome with minimal discomfort. In most cases, clients are impressed with the simplicity of the treatment. There is generally no downtime. There may be some minor swelling or bruising that can be covered with concealer.
All of our dermal filler products include a local anaesthetic but a topical cream can also be applied to make the procedure a more comfortable one. We will work with you to find the right level of anaesthetic to suit your comfort levels.
Results can last for 6-18 months, depending on the type of dermal filler used for the treatment. Lip augmentation can last from 6 to 12 months, again depending on the product used. We recommend review of your treatment after 2-3 weeks initially and then at 6-9 months to assess longevity. We recommend small top ups to maintain results in preference to allowing the product to be completely broken down and removed ahead of another full treatment. This gives the most natural outcome. All dermal fillers used at Shine Clinic are not permanent and will be broken down slowly by enzymes that are naturally in the skin.
Are there side effects or risks involved?
As with any treatment that includes the use of small needles, some swelling and bruising may be experienced for a brief while after the treatment. This will vary from person to person and it is a good idea to be aware of your own propensity for bruising when planning to have dermal filler treatments. They should subside in a few days at most. If they last longer than this, you should contact us immediately.
Dermal fillers are even more effective when experienced alongside other complementary treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and facial renewal treatments.
