Our eyes express so much of who we are. Yet as we get older they often make us look angry or sad when we are not, because of changes to the area around the eyes. Tired sad looking eyes can make you feel tired even if you really are fine.
Here at Shine Clinic we offer a number of eye rejuvenation treatments that can help you by making significant improvements to the area around the eyes. While there are a number of different treatments available, each of them has a different impact and works differently with your body to leave you with a brighter expression around the eyes.
We can offer a combination of treatments that include injections to relax selected muscles, fillers to plump up tired lines and Regen platelet rich plasma or PRP to stimulate collagen and improve moisture content in the skin. These treatments can help by:
- Softening lines that form around the eyes, known as ‘crow’s feet’
- Gently filling in or relaxing lines on the forehead or ‘frown lines’
- Reducing the dark circles under the eyes
- Removing or softening the ‘tear troughs’ below the eyes
- Improving eyebrows by lifting them and redefining them
- Removing the hollow look at the temples that gives a skull appearance to the face
- Improving the delicate skin in the area around the eyes (technically called periorbital) by stimulating collagen
Who can have this treatment?
Dermal Fillers and injections – If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant; it is not recommended that you have dermal filler or anti-wrinkle treatments. The same is true for anyone who is breast feeding. You should avoid any kind of injectible treatment if you are prone to keloid scarring.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatments – Because you are using the refined products of your own blood with this treatment just about anyone can use it. However, as we are relying on your body to heal and grow more collagen, it is important to be in good health at the time of the treatment. If there is a problem with the immune system or a lack of platelets, the treatment may not work well. Also, people who smoke will not get the best results, as healing is generally delayed.
What should I expect during treatment?
Platelet Rich Plasma – PRP sounds almost like something out of science fiction. In this treatment we will take your own blood, usually from the arm, and use it to stimulate growth of collagen and elastin in the skin. The blood is spun down in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The plasma is also separated into the platelet rich and the platelet poor plasma. The platelets are what we want as these tiny components of our blood contain different growth factors for growing collagen. The area to be treated has a numbing cream applied for 30-40 minutes and then is cleansed with an antiseptic. The Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the area for rejuvenation. We use a tiny needle here and the skin is numb. In the eye area, we can inject this into the delicate skin around the eyes where tiny lines and crepey skin are common problems. There are very few treatments that can get this close to the eye with safety.
We recommend repeating this treatment every 6-8 weeks for a total of three treatments. Each treatment will boost collagen a little more. Results are seen over weeks to months as it takes time to grow collagen.
Fillers – The first step when using dermal fillers is the consultation with our doctor, Kathy Gallagher. Because fillers are such an individual treatment, we will want to discuss all concerns and the results you want to achieve in an initial consultation. The treatment itself may only take 15-30 minutes. Areas we commonly treat in the eye area include lifting out deeper frown lines, volumising sunken temples, lifting and contouring the brow and smoothing horizontal lines on the forehead. There are various techniques used to inject dermal fillers in this sensitive area. Optimal results, safety and comfort are our primary concerns. Where necessary we apply a topical numbing cream or use a local anaesthetic injection to increase comfort levels.
Anti-wrinkle Injections – For smoothing out the lines around the eyes, we will use anti-wrinkle injections to relax the muscles responsible for the angry frown line, as well as crow’s feet and horizontal forehead lines. It is best to take photos before and after the treatments to fully appreciate the subtle improvements that can be made.
Are there side effects or risks involved?
Side effects of PRP and dermal filler treatments
Because platelet rich plasma treatments use your own blood, side effects are minimal. Minor bruising and swelling could occur, but will settle quickly.
Dermal filler treatments could also result in minor bruising, swelling and redness. All dermal fillers used at Shine are made from a natural sugar that exists already in the skin. The products all come premixed with a local anaesthetic. If there are allergies to local anaesthetic, this treatment is not recommended. It is extremely rare to have an allergic reaction to the gel filler itself. Injecting dermal fillers requires skill, experience and a good knowledge of anatomy. If placed incorrectly, the filler could put pressure on a vein or artery. In this very rare situation, the filler must be dissolved away. You need to be in the hands of an experienced cosmetic doctor.
Rejuvenating the eye area can give the face such a lift. It is, however, important to keep the face in balance and pay attention to the mid and lower face as well. Treatments for the skin such as combined IPL and RF to improve colour, tone and texture also work well. A perfect complement to PRP to the eye area is to continue the PRP over the entire face and neck. This is best done with the Dermastamp. This is a needling device that can inject the PRP solution into the desired level of the skin along with skin needling to stimulate collagen. It is important to have a treatment plan in place to establish what treatments are needed, over what time frame within an agreed budget.
