This is a question I am regularly asked! It’s also a question that is quite controversial and you will get many differing opinions from cosmetic doctors and the public alike. I would like to put forward my views on the matter and the reasons I hold them.
Before I start, I would just like to mention that cosmetic injectable treatments are medical procedures performed by, or under the supervision of, a cosmetic doctor. Experienced doctor with best products gives best results. These treatments are not permanent! Picture a 20 year old girl with full sleeve and chest tattoos, performed in a non-medical environment, that she will have for life. I think anti-wrinkle injections for a frown line suddenly look a little tame.

There is no doubt that anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are becoming increasingly popular. There is no better way to remove or reduce ageing facial lines and volume loss. But at what age is it a good idea to start these types of treatments?I believe that if the lines are beginning to form, it is appropriate to start anti-wrinkle injections. This may well be in the early 20’s. Frown lines in particular are often inherited from our parents and we only have to look to them to see the outcome if no treatment is given. At the first signs of a frown line, treatment with anti-wrinkle injections will stop this forming a deeper furrow in the future.

I do not believe it is appropriate to use anti-wrinkle injections as prevention when there are no signs of wrinkles at all. In this case, prevention should focus on sun protection and effective skin care (the subject of another article). If anyone is serious about their appearance and preventing wrinkles, they should be wearing a good quality sunscreen everyday, rain or shine, whether working indoors or out, as part of their daily routine.

Dermal fillers in young people also have a place. It is quite common to give a little more volume to a thinner lip. In some circumstances, the facial appearance can be greatly enhanced by the subtle use of dermal fillers in the cheeks. It is important to note that the intent here is to enhance the natural appearance, not to make a person look like someone different!

Another cosmetic treatment that is actually better to do when young is permanent hair reduction. Dark hair on light skin can be easily removed with a course of treatments achieving excellent results. However, as soon as the hair turns grey, the effectiveness of this treatment is gone forever. So don’t leave this one too long!

At any age, the best way to find out if a treatment is right for you is to make an appointment with an experienced cosmetic doctor to discuss all possibilities. Everyone is so different. At Shine, all cosmetic consultations are complimentary.
